There Has Still Been No "Jobs Bill" From Obama. Where Is It???

Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:16 PM EDT
politics, obama, republicans, democrats, congress, p, jobs-bill
By Luke Wright

A week and a half after berating congress to "pass the bill", President Obama still has mysteriously not even introduced said bill for consideration. In his last 5 campaign stops he has uttered the phrase "pass the bill" over one hundred times, yet strangely there still is no bill for congress to consider. Where is it, this "bill"? Obama handed John Boehner a large stack of papers after his joint address to congress last week, but apparently that was just a stage prop. There is no "jobs bill" from the President. What is "The Joker" trying to pull on the American people by continuously prodding congress to "pass the bill" when in reality he has never submitted one to them for consideration. I think Obama needs to wipe the clown make-up off his face, stop his incessant whining, and submit a bill if he wants congress to vote on it. Hell, he was even begging college students "if you love me you'll help pass the bill". Really Mr. President? Have things gotten that pathetic on "The Good Ship Obama" that you have to beg teenagers to help you pass it? Sheesh...what a sad day it is in America...

Where is the "jobs bill" Mr. President?

Just because you can't find it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

How many days did you plan to wait before saying you hadn't had time to read it?

Luke: what does that have to do with ANYTHING? The bill has been sent to Capitol Hill, it just hasn't been formally submitted yet, let alone scheduled for discussion LET ALONE scheduled for a vote (both of which are things Speaker Boehner has to do, NOT Obama or anyone else). Obviously the President understands that this process takes time or else he wouldn't have a trip to Ohio scheduled for next week to promote the bill. Obviously you don't understand how the process works, so shame on you for questioning something you don't know anything about.

Not to speak for Luke, but I have been curious as well.

"In the last week Obama has said "Pass this Bill" or "Pass this bill Right Away" a few thousand times and yet no one in his party has even introduced the bill in the House or the Senate so it cannot be passed or even really discussed in the House or the Senate.

It seems that this is as much political stunt and campaign talking point for Obama's job as it is about jobs for America.

Robert in Ohio.

Good morning!

It has never really been the President's job to write legislation, but the Republicans have been dragging their feet, insisting that he do so.

Now he has. Challenge Reid if you think he's slowing things down, but the time for demanding the President do the job of the Congress is now past. (Oh, and Boehner could bring it up as well, but he could have done that any time in the past year.)

Is it politics? Of course. It's always politics. Point me to a politician that's not spending most of his energy getting ready for the next election (except, of course, any President in his second term -- you want politics out of the White House? There's an option on the table in 2012).

But how can you defend the Republicans for doing nothing, thinking that's the best way to make Obama look bad (politics!), and then criticize the President for going aggressively after a jobs program, just because it will have the side-effect of making him look like he's doing a good job?

"Where's the plan?" is a stale talking point.

However, now you can have even better talking points. You guys can stall for another year, nitpicking the details of this plan while your politicians in the House send stuff to the Senate which looks vaguely like Obama thought it up, but is completely unacceptable to the Democrats, and then claim Reid is the problem.

I'm almost thinking about voting for Bachman, hoping that the Democrats haven't decided (after watching the Republicans for the last three years) that total obstructionism is a pretty good strategy. Eliminating corporate taxes and privatizing Social Security has an outside chance of working. Doing nothing at all for another four years is guaranteed to be a disaster.

Robert: actually I think it's more like giving the GOP the rope with which to hang themselves. That's been Obama's strategy since before last fall's election and the GOP has played right along. Look at what the GOP has "accomplished" since last fall's election: 1) they got the Bush tax cuts extended, something the majority of Americans opposed and still oppose (especially with regard to the highest earners). And how did they do it? By holding "hostage" unemployment benefits for MILLIONS of Americans and absolutely refusing to do ANYTHING (i.e. Boehner said he wouldn't allow ANY bills to proceed until/unless the cuts were extended. 2) Introduced Ryan's budget plan which would radically change Medicare and Medicaid and which the VAST majority of Americans are against. 3) Almost caused a government shutdown over the 2011 budget negotiations. 4) Almost caused the US Govt to default on it's debts as part of the debt ceiling debate. In addition, the far right wing of the GOP blocked a "grand bargain" that would have cut future deficits by more than $4 trillion and would have prevented S& P's credit downgraded. 5) Have STILL NOT INTRODUCED EVEN ONE "jobs, jobs, jobs" bill, even though that is the campaign slogan they pretty much ALL ran on last fall.

In short, if Obama is "weak", then the GOP is on it's last breath. And all the poll numbers show that. Obama STILL beats Perry and Romney according to the latest polls. Obama's overall approval rating is STILL in the low/mid 40s (absolutely amazing considering current circumstances) while Congress' approval rating is under 15%. 81% of Democrats approve of the job Obama is doing at a time when a CLEAR MAJORITY of Americans think that THEIR OWN CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE REELECTED.

Robert --

Obama is putting pressure on Congress to pass jobs legislation. That's what I want him to do. I suspect that's what most Americans want him to do.

Reid will wait till he has the votes. The Democrat's majority in the Senate is slim and there are many very conservative Democratic Senators. Did you really believe that he could get all of them? I will be surprised if he does.

Therefore I am one of the people, who if polled, don't believe that this bill will help with unemployment, but my opinion doesn't particularly reflect on Obama. Gridlock is good news for Republican Presidential candidates -- higher unemployment means a better shot at the White House.

The Republican's chances next year depend as well on who they choose, but Obama still edges out even Romney in most polls and if you let the right wing have their way the Democrats chances go up significantly.

All that said, it's not going to be a walk in the park for anybody.

Tell the Rupublican/Teabagger sewer scum to get off their azzes and actually do something for their fellow citizens instead of sucking up to big corporations and Boner and spending megabucks to defend a blatantly unconstitutional and totally useless anti-gay law. The teabaggers are a phenomenal waste of time and money. They don't have a braincell between them.

Indeed, they are so ''smart'' that their Senate has utterly failed to pass a budget in nearly three years. So ''smart'' that they could allow a half-billion in our money to be poured down a California rathole, never to be seen again, so ''smart'' that a posse of Dem House and Senate members were ripped off to the tune of over a million bucks by a flim-flam artist in LA, and so ''smart'' that they hand guns out like party favors to Mexican drug mobsters who immediately use said guns to kill Americans.

With ''smarts''like these, who needs brains....?

You were okay with the thief Cheney from Halliburton doing the bidding of his industry even though it meant betraying our nation? Oh, come on. I was an independent, never signed up for a political party, but the kind of lies that you people have told in the last 15-20 years have made me a staunch support of the Democratic Party and I will work diligently to have Mr. Obama elected for a second term. Right Here In Ohio, Mr. Boehner ...

... ran on a job platform.

Six months ago, he was peddling 'tax cuts' (the only thing he knows how to say) as 'the way' to jobs.

        He was called on it.

'Mr. Bohener -- that hasn't worked ... you ran on jobs!'

Visibly shaken, Mr. Boehner began extended his arm, moved it back and forth, scanning the audience for a questioner. Desperate to 'get off the job hook,' he started asking, 'ma'am, do you have a question ... what about you, sir?'

But it didn't work. Someone called out again, 'Mr. Boehner -- we've done tax cuts for 10 years, but we have fewer jobs than ever ...

At that point, the security troll started lumbering down the aisle to usher out the person with the audacity to ask a question that Mr. Boehner would prefer remain unasked -- because he hasn't the slightest idea what to do with it ...

When Mr. Boehner uses 'security' squelch questions he wants left alone, what might THAT imply about HIS job record. Moreover, what does it imply about the implicit promise made in platforms?

Indeed, what does it suggest about why we retain elections at all?

Their new jobs bill was just submitted 2 days ago by republican house rep Gohmert (TX).

The Texas lawmaker introduced his own jobs bill on Wednesday, and he gave it the exact same name as the president's bill. Gohmert says his bill will create jobs simply by taking the corporate tax rate to zero.

What a crock! In light of revised GDP numbers from 2009 and 2010, the main "problem" with the American Recovery Act was that it wasn't big enough and didn't include enough money for infrastructure/construction projects (i.e. "shovel ready" jobs). In fact, less than 10% of the stimulus money went to infrastructure/construction projects. Most of it went to tax benefits (eg $300 Billion on individual tax credits, Making Work Pay tax credit, energy incentives, business incentives, etc), entitlement programs (eg $200 B on Medicaid/Medicare, unemployment insurance, family services, housing, energy, agriculture, etc.). Of the remaining $205B that had been spent (on "Contracts, Grants, Loans") by the end of 2010 only $50 B (i.e. about 7%) had gone to "Infrastructure" and "Transportation" projects. And in spite of the minimal amount of money that went toward actual "shovel ready" jobs, the fact is that a February 2011 CBO report on the economic impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act estimated that the spending added anywhere from 1.1 to 3.5 percent to overall economic activity; reduced the unemployment rate by 0.7 to 1.9 percent; increased the number of people employed (i.e. "saved") between 1.3 million and 3.5 million; and created anywhere from 1.8 to 5.0 million jobs. That's as real as it gets, Luke. Care to back up back up ANY of your claims with some hard facts and numbers. So far I've seen NONE from you....

The "plan" has not yet been introduced (sponsored) in either the House or the Senate and until it does there is no American Jobs Act, but simply a bunch of ideas that President Obama is wailing about in the campaign trail.

There is little chance that, if introduced at all, the bill in total and in its current form will pass the Congress.

Senator Reid has said that he does not know when or how he will introduce the president's plan in the Senate and there has been no talk of a sponsor or anyone introducing the bill in the House.

This politicla theater to fiel the president's campaign trail speeches and message.

It will be interesting to see who will be the first one to pull something out of the bill for consideration......there are a couple of parts of the bill that would likely be passed fairly easily , while other parts will be quite difficult to even get to the floor for votes.

Too many temporary "fixes" and giveaways to stimulate votes for President Obama and too little real tax reform, regulatory reform or legislation that change things for the long term and create stability in the private sector.

The AJA is about President Obama's job more than anything else and the content, the timing of release and the marketing campaign are all about his reelection and most reasonable people while accepting that it can be good for people "in the short term" argue with the fact that it is a campaign message first and foremost.

Thans for the article, voted up

There was NEVER any chance that this bill would pass in its entirety and EVERYONE in DC (including Obama) knew that even BEFORE Obama unveiled it. However, it's still 153 more pages of ideas than the GOP has introduced to date to help create jobs (and that's counting the two page, BS, reduce corporate tax rates to ZERO, FOREVER, bill that GOP Rep "Gomer" submitted this week). Of course it's politics and political theater, that's what BOTH parties are doing. What would you call what the GOP has been doing for the last two and half years? If THAT wasn't politics and political theater then I don't know what it was, because there is NOTHING ELSE THERE. The ONLY thing the GOP has done in the last three years is grandstand, stall, obstruct and try to tear Obama down (oh, and introduce multiple bills to make it harder for women to get abortions and other reproductive services).

Sounds like you are of the opinion that this jobs bill is a joke and a campaign strategy rather than a plan to help the American people

Hell, what else would it be Robert? If Obama was really interested in creating jobs for Americans he would have tried something 2 1/2 years ago. This is all just more smoke and mirrors to let him campaign for free under the guise of "getting the jobs bill passed". Sheesh...Obama is such a piece of crap...

Once Obama shows that he can "task" (do one thing) effectively then he can consider multi-tasking.

It seems that some on the left view thesituation that Obama is in as more serious than you.

I wish there were more with your view
